Designing a System

Servos & Simulation has designed some of the most customized systems in the world. These have found homes in Korea, Europe and the US. Servos & Simulation has developed some of the highest angled systems and some of the fastest systems on the market.

In this design, the system had to acheived angles in excess of 55˚ in roll and pitch, 360˚ in yaw with ±12 (or more) inches in heave, surge and sway.

Below are illustrations and photos of the design phase to build up to installation.

Servos & Simulation first designs the structure in a solid modeling program. The design scope was for a motion platform that could achieve 60˚ in roll and pitch and 360˚ in yaw and still fit inside a radar dome. The yaw axis should be able to turn while the base was at 60˚ in either roll or pitch. Servos & Simulation designed it for both.

This is the building phase of the project. The system was to be installed in an outdoor enviroment on the West Coast of the US. Therefore, NEMA and watertight fittings were a requirement as well as powdercoating of all metal parts. The 360˚ yaw axis can be observed in this photo. In this configuration, the system achieved 37˚ in roll and pitch. Click here for a video of the motion base in its design phase.

This is the second part of the build phase for this project. This was installed on the top of the yaw bearing and the wiring passed through a hole in the yaw bearing. This part of the system achieved 20˚ in roll and pitch. The system was only 12 inches tall.Click here for a video of the motion base in its design phase.

The interesting item about this entire project is that the customer split the requirement. The larger motion platform was shipped to the site prior to the second motion platform being installed. Design and quality control was a strong point in this system as the two systems had to mate. The software had to be split as well. Software integration was done via email and phone support as to keep the project well under budget.

The second part of the system (the smaller motion base) was shipped so that it could be disassembled for ease of installation. This way, the top could be easily removed and the base could be carried to the installation site by two technicians. Once the bottom was installed, the customer could perform test to make sure that all the electronics were operating properly. This also allowed the customer to modify the top to their requirement.

The electronics and the computer are over 250' feet away from the system. The design for the wiring was taken into consideration so that no external noise would come into the system via the wiring. The system is quiet and smooth.
